Ghost Terminator Column

Improve your HPLC resolution by removing impurities with low or nonpolarity.
The Ghost Terminator column attracts weak-polar and non-polar organic impurities without altering the mobile phase, thereby purifying both the mobile phase and the system, eliminating most ghost peaks and extending column and system lifetimes.

What are ghost peaks?
Ghost peaks are unknown signals in chromatograms, typically appearing during gradient separations.

They can overlap with peaks of interest, complicating quantitative analysis and resolution.

Investigating and removing ghost peaks can be time-consuming, as they may have multiple sources.

Installation

The Ghost Terminator column should be installed between the mixer and the injector. The sample solution should not flow through this column.

Considerations
  • Install the column between the mixer and injector. Being installed after the injector would cause strong adsorption to samples and affect analysis.

  • Prior to switching to a new analytical column, flush Ghost Terminator column with 80% methanol solution at 1 mL/min for 20 minutes.

  • Not all impurities are able to be adsorbed by Ghost Terminator columns.

  • Ion-pair solvents in the mobile phase are adsorbed by Ghost Terminator columns and affect retention and peak shape. Use with caution during such mobile phases.

  • A column’s lifetime depends on the analytical conditions, the mobile phase, and solvent purity.

  • For optimal performance, Ghost Terminator columns should be changed regularly.

  • The Ghost Terminator column serves as a purification part of the system, removing impurities and preventing damage to the HPLC column and the HPLC system.

  • Flush the column with high-ratio water before and after using buffer salt mobile phase to prevent buffer salting out and blocking the column.

  • If Ghost Terminator column does not perform as expected, disconnect the outlet of the column and flush it with 100% acetonitrile.

  • There are two hardware configurations for Ghost Terminator columns: one for HPLC with a working pressure resistance of 400 bar and the HP configuration that withstands working pressures of 1000 bar.
  • HP refers to the hardware for UHPLC.
